The Traveler: Ingrid Remak of Minneapolis.

The scene: A canoeist prepares for an excursion on Lake Superior at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, on the North Shore. According to Remak, "This photo captures what it felt like to canoe that day. It was as if we were paddling into the clouds."

The moment: Remak and a friend had camped at the state park the previous night. "I had just run back to our campsite to do a final sweep as my friend was loading the canoe. The lake was unusually calm, and when I turned I was struck by the way the water seamlessly spilled into the sky. Our vessel looked so small against the blue wilderness beyond," Remak wrote in an e-mail. "I paused for a moment to enjoy and snapped a photo."

Destination: The rocky shores of the lake, also known as Gitche Gumee, are "one of the biggest treasures found in Minnesota," Remak wrote. "Seems like anyone, no matter where you find your perch on the water's edge, feels both the wonder and peace of being by this mighty lake." Lake Superior is the largest of the five Great Lakes, with a surface area of 31,700 square miles.

The equipment: An iPhone.
