Man fatally stabbed in Minneapolis is identified

Stabbing victim was a Richfield residentAuthorities on Monday identified a man who was stabbed to death over the weekend in Minneapolis' Longfellow area.

Dean Schmitz, 47, of Richfield died about 12:30 a.m. Sunday after being stabbed in the chest in the 2900 block of 27th Avenue S., according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. Charges are pending.

The stabbing occurred when a fight started near the Schooner Tavern, at the corner of E. 29th Street and 27th Avenue S., said Police Sgt. William Palmer.

A 40-year-old woman was also slightly hurt in the altercation, according to police. Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call police at 612-692-8477.
