St. Paul police are investigating a shooting in west Frogtown on Saturday night that left one man with noncritical injuries.

Officers with the city's gun violence detail were conducting a traffic stop near the intersection of Blair Avenue and Victoria Street around 5 p.m., when the motorist exited his vehicle and ran through the alley, authorities said. An officer chased the suspect through the alley behind the 800 block of Blair Avenue, when he heard a gunshot.

The officer soon located the man, who now had a gunshot wound to his torso. Two firearms lay nearby.

A police spokesman said the pursuing officer's weapon was not discharged; two other law enforcement sources say the man may have accidentally shot himself while attempting to ditch the guns.

He was taken to Regions Hospital with injuries believed to be noncritical. Once he recovers, the man is expected to be booked into jail on a felony warrant.

Elsewhere, another person was shot on the 100 block of Moreland Avenue in West St. Paul on Saturday evening. That person was taken to Regions Hospital with unknown injuries. St. Paul police are helping with that case.
