March 15: Gophers women gymnasts tie for Big Ten dual meet title

The Gophers clinched a share of the Big Ten title in women's gymnastics on Saturday by winning a quadrangular meet in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Led by sophomore Lindsay Mable, who tied for first in the all-around with a score of 39.600, the Gophers totaled 196.700. Penn State edged the Wolverines for second, 196.475 to 196.025. Iowa was fourth with 194.750.

The results meant No. 13 Minnesota finished 19-2 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten, tied with Nebraska. No. 7 Michigan finished in a tie for third with Penn State at 5-2 after tying with the Gophers for the conference title a year ago.

Mable won on the balance beam (9.925), was second in the vault (9.900) and tied for second in floor exercise (9.900).

Other top-three performances for the Gophers: Rachel Hains tied for second on the beam (9.900), and Jenny Covers and Kylie Schermann tied for third in the vault (9.850).

U sweeps in softball on shutouts

The Gophers beat two teams, Troy and Coastal Carolina, on Saturday by 2-0 scores in the Chanticleer Showdown in Conway, S.C. Starter Sara Groenewegen pitched the first four innings against Troy and didn't allow a hit. Sara Moulton got the last three outs for a save.

Tyler Walker gave the Gophers a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring triple in the third inning. Kaitlyn Richardson made it 2-0 with a homer to right field in the sixth.

Moulton threw a four-hitter against Coastal Carolina and struck out 12. The Gophers (20-3) scored an unearned run in the second and got another on Richardson's RBI single in the sixth.

• Host Sacramento State beat the Gophers 3-2 in baseball. Michael Handel and Mark Tatera each had two for the Gophers (8-6), who hurt themselves with three errors.

• The Gophers took third in a five-team men's gymnastics meet in Lincoln, Neb.

• Senior Jon Lehman placed 10th in the weight throw in the NCAA men's indoor track and field championships on Friday in Albuquerque, N.M. His toss was 68 feet, 7 inches.
