A University of Minnesota Regents committee approved Mark Coyle for Gophers athletic director on Thursday morning, setting the stage for his final approval by the full Board of Regents on Friday.

The process is seen as a formality, as Coyle was introduced as the new AD on Wednesday afternoon on campus. There was minimal discussion by the Faculty & Staff Affairs Committee on the approval Thursday morning.

U President Eric Kaler "enthusiastically" recommended Coyle's approval Thursday, calling him "simply impressive."

The full board meets Friday, and Coyle will then be set to start his new role either in late May or by June 1.
