Baby Shel is slated to take the stage for First Avenue’s Best New Bands show at 10:30 p.m. Friday. (The Minnesota Star Tribune)

Murder Shoes: The first band of the night is also probably the most straight-ahead rock band of the night, in a good way, with angelic-voiced frontwoman Tess Weinberg and devilish dueling guitars. They played an impressive residency at the Nomad Pub's Minneseries last summer and then won over many critics with their debut album, "Daydreaming." (7:30 p.m.)

Lexii Alijai: This 17-year-old St. Paul rapper already showed a lot of braggadocio on last year's album "Joseph's Coat," which earned KMOJ and KFAI radio play. Now, she really has much to brag about, with a strong local buzz and a vicarious Grammy nomination for her guest spot on "Jealous," a single from Bay Area R&B star Kehlani's album "You Should Be Here," which is up for best urban contemporary album. (8:15 p.m.)

Perfume Monster: Led by falsetto-loving, cool-swaggering frontman Hazen — yep, just Hazen — the trio delivers spacey, ethereal but sweet and sultry electro-R&B that falls somewhere between Justin Timberlake and Spooky Black. They've been stepping out as a live quintet more in recent months and gaining ample spins on Radio K. (9 p.m., followed by Bruise Violet at 9:45.)

Baby Shel: After making innumerable five-hour drives to and from the Red Lake Indian Reservation to perform in town, the heavy-hitting firebrand rapper emerged triumphant at last year's Are You Local? competition at First Avenue. He has since opened for Prof, Twista and many other rap stars around the state. (10:30 p.m.)

Eric Mayson: The St. Paul Conservatory for the Performing Arts grad and musical theater veteran stepped out as a frontman last year after stints as a keyboardist and backup vocalist with Crunchy Kids, Caroline Smith and Toki Wright & Big Cats. His cosmically catchy debut album, "Detail," landed at No. 6 in our year-end Twin Cities Critics Tally. (11:15 p.m.)

Aero Flynn: Longtime Eau Claire scenester Josh Scott of Amateur Love notoriety got out from under his pal Justin Vernon's shadow last year with his psychedelic and dramatic astro-pop band, whose live lineup features Solid Gold bassist Adam Hurlburt, Bon Iver guitarist Mike Noyce and omnipresent brothers Jacob and Jeremy Hanson.
