Minneapolis Washburn chemistry teacher charged with soliciting prostitute
Washburn High chemistry teacher on administrative leave after the incident.
Washburn High School chemistry teacher Sam B. Jayakumar, 39, of Edina, was arrested May 13 and booked into the Hennepin County jail, where he was released several hours later.
A letter to Washburn families from Principal Rhonda Dean on May 18 said Jayakumar "is on leave until the end of the year." The letter did not explain why.
Minneapolis School Board Member Rebecca Gagnon confirmed Friday that Jayakumar remains on administrative leave, but said that could change in light of official charges.
Jayakumar is facing one count of solicitation of a prostitute and one count of loitering with intent to participate in prostitution, both misdemeanors.
The teacher's Web page, which was taken down last month, said Jayakumar has been teaching in Minneapolis since 2005 and at Washburn since 2007.
According to the criminal complaint:
Jayakumar pulled up to the corner of 12th Avenue S. and E. Lake Street around 10:17 p.m. on May 13 with his lights on. The undercover officer standing nearby approached his vehicle when Jayakumar rolled down his window and asked how much she was looking for.
The undercover officer told him "$100 for everything," but he countered with an offer of $60. She accepted and Jayakumar was immediately arrested.
He has been charged by summons and is scheduled to appear in court on July 9.
