Minnesota Duluth advances to Final Faceoff with overtime win over Minnesota State Mankato

The Bulldogs will play the Gophers in the first conference semifinal at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ridder Arena.

Elizabeth Giguere's goal 2 minutes, 30 seconds into overtime gave Minnesota Duluth a 3-2 victory over Minnesota State Mankato on Sunday afternoon at Amsoil Arena in the deciding third game of their first-round WCHA playoff series.

The win puts the Bulldogs in the WCHA Final Faceoff. They will play the No. 1-ranked Gophers at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ridder Arena in the first semifinal.

UMD took a 2-0 lead, but the Mavericks tied it on Jessica Kondas' goal at 2:35 of the third period.

Big inning sinks Gophers

The Gophers baseball team lost 14-8 to Indiana State at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. Minnesota (2-6) led 6-3 late in the game before a 10-run top of the eighth inning gave the Sycamores a 13-6 lead.

Kyle Bork had a two-run homer and an RBI single for the Gophers and Jack Kelly had a solo home run and three RBI as well.

Former Gopher Shane Streich of the Atlanta Track Club placed third in the 800-meter run (1 minute, 46.86 seconds) in the USATF Indoor Championships in Spokane, Wash. Ben Psicihulis, a Gophers graduate student who will be eligible to compete in track this spring, ran unattached and was ninth in the 400 (47.03).

The Gophers women's golf team was in fifth place with a score of 576 after the first two rounds (293-283) of the Westbrook Invitational in Peoria, Ariz. Joanne Free of Minnesota was tied for 11th after rounds of 72 and 70 for a 2-under 142.

The Gophers softball team's game against Wichita State on Sunday was rained out in Charlotte, N.C. Minnesota (9-6) ended the Niner Invitational there with a 2-2 record and next will play six games over five days, starting Saturday, in three Oklahoma cities.
