A new law that takes effect Aug. 1 will lower the threshold for gross misdemeanor drunk driving arrests for first-offenders to .16 percent from the current .20 percent. That could push nearly 60 percent of current misdemeanor DWIs in Minnesota into the more serious category, boosting gross misdemeanors by more than 70 percent.
