Minnesota Scene: Gophers defenseman Jake Bischoff signs with Islanders

Gophers senior defenseman Jake Bischoff signed a two-year, entry-level contract Tuesday with the New York Islanders. He was the organization's seventh round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

He was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and a first team All-Big Ten pick after career highs this past season in points (32), assists (27) and blocks (88).

U's Gilbert to transfer

Gophers sophomore Ahmad Gilbert, a 6-6 forward from Philadelphia, said Tuesday he is transferring. He averaged 1.7 points this past season in limited minutes. He played in 36 games, starting six. He will have two years of eligibility left.

U gymnast honored

Gophers Justin Karstadt, a sophomore from Toronto, Ontario, was named the National Gymnast of the Week by the College Gymnastics Association.

In Minnesota's win over Nebraska on Saturday, Karstadt won the all-around with a score of 87.050. He is just the fourth gymnast in the nation to score above 87.000 this season, and first in the Big Ten. Karstadt also won event titles on rings (14.700) and parallel bars (14.600).

AP honors Jones

Junior guard Tre Jones of Apple Valley was named the Associated Press Player of the Year in boys' basketball after leading the Eagles to the Class 4A state title.

Other members of the AP first team are seniors McKinley Wright of Champlin Park, Nathan Reuvers of Lakeville North and Brad Davison of Maple Grove, and sophomore Matthew Hurt of Rochester John Marshall.

• St. Catherine soccer coach Chris Citowicki resigned after six seasons to become associate head coach with the North Dakota women's soccer team.

• Longtime St. Mary's volleyball coach Mike Lester resigned to be athletic director at Rochester Community and Technical College.
