Minnesota Scene: Gophers wrestler makes world championships team

For the second consecutive year, Gophers wrestler Mitch McKee will represent the United States at the U23 World Championships.

McKee, who will be a junior for the Gophers next season, went 8-0 at the U23 World Team Trial over the weekend at Akron, Ohio.

The U23 World Championships will be held in Bucharest, Romania.

McKee dominated Dom Demas, who wrestles for Oklahoma, in the finals of the 65-kilogram bracket with a 9-6 victory and a 10-0 technical superiority.

Several other Gophers experienced success at Akron: Carson Brolsma finished in fifth place, Skyler Petry in sixth place and Steve Polakowski in eighth.

Matt Solter took a perfect game into the seventh, had a no-hitter through 6 ⅔ innings, but the St. Paul Saints left 13 men on base and lost 1-0 to the Cleburne Railroaders. Solter ended up going 7⅔ innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking one.

• Trainer Bob Johnson won the Minnesota Stallion Breeders' Quarter Horse Futurity for the seventh time Sunday at Canterbury Park. The 350-yard dash for 2-year-olds with a $30,305 purse went to BHR Flashing Effort by a head over favorite Haute Wagon.

• Augustana defeated Columbus State 3-2 for the NCAA Division II baseball championship in Cary, N.C. Senior Jacob Blank (9-0) pitched a four-hitter, striking out 12 for the NSIC champion Vikings (52-9).
