Minnesotans hope London is stop after track trials in Oregom

The U.S. Olympic track and field trials begin Friday and run through July 1 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Here is a glance at the schedule and some of the athletes with Minnesota ties who will try for Olympic team berths:

Schedule: The meet runs Friday through Monday, then takes a two-day break before the final four days of competition starting Thursday. The men's and women's hammer throw was held Thursday as a separate event. Olympic team members will be chosen in 38 events.

TV: NBC (Ch. 11) will air coverage of the finals on Saturday (7-8 p.m.) and Sunday (6-7 p.m.), as well as June 30 (8-9 p.m.) and July 1 (6-7 p.m.). Additional coverage will be shown on NBC Sports Network from 8-10 p.m. on Friday, Monday and Thursday, and June 29 (5-7 p.m.).

What's at stake: The top three finishers in each event, provided they have met the Olympic A standard, will be named to the U.S. Olympic team.

Local ties: Many athletes with Minnesota connections are expected to compete at the trials. Among them:

• Team USA Minnesota, the distance-running group headquartered in Minneapolis, will send Heather Kampf (800 meters), Gabriele Anderson (1,500), Katie McGregor (10,000) and Jamie Cheever (3,000 steeplechase).

• Athletes who attended high school or other colleges in Minnesota include Garrett Heath (1,500) and Elliot Heath (5,000) of Winona; Will Leer of Minnetonka (1,500); Rob Finnerty of Burnsville (1,500); Justin Tyner of Baxter/Brainerd High (3,000 steeplechase); Rachel Longfors of Erhard/Pelican Rapids High (discus); Laura Januszewski of Burnsville (800 meters); Amanda Smock of Melrose (triple jump); and former Minnesota State, Mankato athletes Jim Dilling (high jump) and Katelin Rains (pole vault).
