MSU Mankato reassigns hockey coach Jutting

Minnesota State Mankato men's hockey coach Troy Jutting was reassigned to "administrative responsibilities" effective immediately, the school announced Sunday.

Jutting coached the Mavericks for 12 years, going 184-224-55 (.467) with one NCAA tournament appearance (2003). He was WCHA Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2008. He also spent 10 years as an assistant and four as a player.

School President Richard Davenport said he will work with athletic director Kevin Buisman in a national search for a new coach.

"This is the right time to make a change, and we're committed to taking our men's hockey program to new heights," Davenport said.

Davenport said the search will begin immediately.

"I leave this position with a lot of great memories and am extremely proud of the work we've done in ensuring that our student-athletes have earned degrees, have become successful professionally and are serving as community leaders," Jutting said. "We've accomplished a lot in the last 12 years with the game of hockey."

Jutting's new duties will be effective through the remainder of his contract, which expires in June 2013.

Gophers walk off winners at Dome Matt Halloran's home run in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday gave the Gophers a 4-3 victory over Michigan at the Metrodome and a three-game sweep of their opening Big Ten series.

Halloran went 3-for-5. Drew Ghelfi, the fifth Gophers pitcher, got the victory.

3 Gophers chosen for world tournamentGophers women's hockey players Amanda Kessel, Anne Schleper and Megan Bozek were selected to the U.S. team for the Women's World Championships, which run April 7-14 in Burlington, Vt.

The team also includes former Gophers Gigi Marvin, Jenny Potter, Jocelyne Lamoureux and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls, and one high-schooler, Gophers signee Hannah Brandt of Hill-Murray.

Van Rooyen fades; U golfers 7th Second-round leader Erik Van Rooyen of the Gophers finished at 2-over-par 74 in the final round, dropping him to a tie for third place at 4-under 212 at the 54-hole LSU Spring Invitational in Baton Rouge. The Gophers tied for seventh at 27 over.

Host Louisiana State won the event at 11 under par, two strokes ahead of Iowa.

LSU's Austin Gugtsell shot a closing 65 and finished at 9 under, winning medalist honors by four strokes over Purdue's Jakob Ziegler.

Etc. Tyler Walker hit a game-tying homer in the Gophers sixth, but Nebraska scored the decisive run in the eighth in a 5-4 softball victory at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.

• The Gophers' First Novice Eight boat finished fourth in the Grand Final of the Women's Collegiate Novice rowing event, clocking a time of 7 minutes, 38.76 seconds at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay in San Diego.
