Stark naked, covered in cuts and insect bites, and bleeding from a police dog bite, a North St. Paul man was arrested early Friday morning after a five-hour chase through Cottage Grove and Woodbury.

When captured at a Woodbury residence about 2:30 a.m., he told police he was merely there to visit his grandmother.

David P. Delmore, 27, was suspected of being intoxicated after almost running another vehicle off the road near 88th Street and Hillside Trail in Cottage Grove shortly after 10 p.m., according to the police complaint. Officers saw the pickup -- with a boat and trailer attached -- as it headed onto Jasmine Avenue S., but the driver refused to stop, the complaint says.

The pickup then sped north and east into Woodbury, and police who joined in the chase laid spike sticks at several spots, which deflated the vehicle's tires, the complaint says.

The vehicle, running on its rims, going through stop signs and careening into oncoming traffic lanes, finally stopped in the 3600 block of Manning Avenue (Highway 95) north of Bailey Road in Woodbury. The driver refused orders to surrender, and headed on foot into a wooded area.

Police from Woodbury and Cottage Grove, with Washington County sheriff's deputies, surrounded the area, assisted by a dog and a State Patrol helicopter.

As officers trailed the suspect, they came across articles of clothing covered in blood, along with Delmore's wallet, the complaint said.

About 2:30 a.m., when Delmore was knocking on the door of a Woodbury resident, he was taken into custody despite denying wrongdoing and asserting he was visiting his grandmother.

One tip-off: "Delmore was holding a small piece of plastic over the front of himself due to the fact that he was completely naked," the complaint says. He was also covered with cuts, abrasions and a deep gash on his leg "which was consistent with a K-9 bite," it says.

Officers also noted an odor of alcohol on Delmore's breath, but too much time had elapsed since the initial report to charge him with driving under the influence. He does, however, face two felonies and a misdemeanor. He was charged with obstructing the legal process, fleeing a police officer and reckless driving.
