Nightlife notebook: Dancing to a different beat

Dancing to a different beat

This is a fact: There isn't any other hip-hop night quite like "Get Cryphy" in downtown Minneapolis. At a time when Top 40 rules the club scene, it's a miracle that this against-the-grain dance night has made it this long. Tonight, "Get Cryphy" celebrates its one-year anniversary at First Avenue.

The monthly night is the brainchild of two DJs, Jimmy 2 Times and Plain Ole Bill. The duo commanded a similar DJ set at Foundation before that club closed at the end of 2007. At First Avenue, they were given an even bigger license to "do whatever we wanted," Jimmy 2 Times said.

Over four turntables, the two DJs pump out high-energy hip-hop, much of which you won't hear on the radio (or in other clubs). The night's theme came from the melding of two of their favorite hip-hop genres, crunk and hyphy -- thus creating "cryphy." They also dabble in Baltimore club, Miami bass, Chicago juke and electro house. They'll often throw in a hard-hitting Top 40 track such as T.I.'s "What You Know" just for fun.

"It doesn't matter if it's on the radio or not," Jimmy 2 Times said. "If it's got energy, people are going to get into it."

The crowds agree. Held in First Avenue's smaller VIP room, it's an intimate experience with about 200 people packing the joint each month. For tonight's anniversary party, the duo is bringing in DJs Billy Ray Serious, Mike the 2600 King and DJ Fundamentalist. The night will be hosted by Twin Cities rapper Prof. More info: myspace.com/cryphygetting.

A Surly three-peat

Beer geeks know where they'll be Wednesday night -- at the Blue Nile for the release of Surly 3. The anniversary beer will celebrate the popular brewery's third year in existence. For the occasion, the Blue Nile will have that beer (a braagot brewed with honey and Munich malt), plus six other Surlys on tap. About 20 other bars will get Surly 3 later in the week.
