Householder M.D., James "Jim" Richard Age 96, passed away peacefully at home in Minnetonka on April 8, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He will be remembered as a loving husband, patient father and compassionate, sensitive doctor. Born October 3, 1923, in Chicago, Jim attended Oak Park High School and began his higher education at Carleton College in Northfield. After the attack on Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the Navy and was accepted into the V-12 Program at St. Mary's College in Winona. While on active duty he received orders to attend the University of Iowa Medical School, followed by an internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. He served as a general medical officer in the Navy while at Moffett Field, CA. He returned to the University of Iowa Medical School for a three-year anesthesiology residency program. Jim taught anesthesiology at the Siriraj and Chulalongkorn Medical School in Bangkok, Thailand, through Washington University of St. Louis. He then returned to active duty at Naval Station Norfolk, VA. Afterwards, Jim, accepted an assistant professorship at the University of Washington in Seattle. It is here, while taking out the trash, that he met Margaret, who would become the love of his life and wife of 65 years. With Margaret's support, Jim decided to follow his passion for ophthalmology and, along with Margaret and their three children, moved to Minnesota to begin his four-year ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He was in private practice in Fargo, ND, for two years and then in Minneapolis until his retirement in 1998. Jim held hospital staff appointments at Methodist Hospital, Abbott Northwestern and Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. After retirement, he indulged in photography, reading, swimming and spending time with family and friends in Minnesota and Tucson, AZ. Jim, was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Florence Householder, stepmother, Jean, and half-brothers Michael and Peter. Survived by Margaret Ann (Ottersen), children, James Jr., Steven (Fiammetta) and Susan. Grandchildren, Elena, and Andrew Temple. Half-sister Patricia (Jerry) Buczynskyj.
