'Under the Porcelain Mask'
Sun Mee Chomet's "Asiamnesia" could be subtitled "A brief history of Asian-American women in the Western imagination." The one-act, starring Chomet, is a time-traveling dinner party with guests that include Anna May Wong, the first Asian-American film star; Isabel Rosario Cooper, a Filipina actress who was the lover of Gen. Douglas MacArthur and who later committed suicide, and famous geisha Yuki Kato Morgan, who caused a sensation by marrying a nephew of J.P. Morgan. Chomet's show is paired with May Lee Yang's "Sia(b)," about a Hmong-American woman's search for her authentic self. Both one-acts are part of the opening of Mu Performing Arts' season, titled "Under the Porcelain Mask: Asian American Women Speak Out." (Rohan Preston)

'A Life in the Theatre'
David Mamet puts two actors in the spotlight with his 1977 drama about ... two actors. Bain Boehlke plays Robert, in his declining years and sensitive about how he is received. Robin Everson portrays John, a youngster on the way up. It's a real backstage drama, episodically showing glimpses of the repertory life in all its glory and horror. 'Hip Hop Dance: From the Streets to the Stage'
This program produced by the Minnesota Shubert Center explores hip-hop dance's impact on culture, art and music through a series of panel discussions, dance exhibitions and dance workshops. On Wednesdays, hip-hop's history, cultural significance and creative process will be explored; on Fridays participants will have the chance to learn hip-hop dances. The highlight is sure to be the Groundbreaker Battle (Oct. 4), a battle among local dance crews with special performances by members of Rhymesayers and the Battle Cats. The day will also feature panel discussions and dance workshops. (Jahna Peloquin)
