A reported home intruder was shot to death in St. Paul early Monday by one of the residents, officials said.

The gunfire occurred in the Hamline-Midway neighborhood in the 1300 block of Englewood Avenue, northeast of the intersection of Hamline and Minnehaha avenues, police said.

A 29-year-old man, suspected of being the shooter, and a 34-year-old woman were arrested and jailed on suspicion of second-degree murder. They have yet to be charged. The Star Tribune generally does not identify suspects before they are charged.

According to police:

About 1:45 a.m., officers were sent to a home where a woman told a 911 dispatcher that a man she knew was trying to get in. A man who also lives there got on the phone and said he fired several shots and the intruder was down on their front porch.

A second 911 call soon followed, this time from the wounded man, who said he was dying but didn't offer any further information.

Officers located the man still on the porch. Fire medics took the man to Regions Hospital, where he died hours later. His identity has yet to be released.
