Pacquiao pounds Margarito for title

Manny Pacquiao used both speed and power in a dominating performance to beat Antonio Margarito and win their 150-pound showdown Saturday in Arlington, Texas.

It was the eighth different title won by Pacquiao, this time against a tough opponent who outweighed him by nearly 20 pounds and towered over him.

Margarito tried gamely but had no answer as Pacquiao landed punches in flurries from the opening bell. By the middle rounds his face was a bloody mess.

Vonn sixth in slalom race Lindsey Vonn's risk/reward decision came with no reward, leaving her sixth in Levi, Finland, in the first World Cup slalom of the season.

Marlies Schild of Austria won, edging Olympic champion Maria Riesch of Germany by 0.03 seconds. Vonn, a Burnsville native, who was the World Cup overall champion last season, finished sixth after nearly falling.

"I was trying a little bit too hard," she said. "Sometimes you make mistakes when you are risking."

Edwards wins again in Nationwide Carl Edwards won the Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, leading 152 laps in claiming his second straight victory.

Elsewhere: Vettel takes Formula One pole

• Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull put pressure on championship leader Fernando Alonso by taking the pole position for the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in the United Arab Emirates.

• Greg Anderson wrapped up his fourth Pro Stock season championship and first since 2005, qualifying fourth in the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif.

Push for PGA card stays strong Roland Thatcher is on his way in an improbable bid to keep his PGA Tour card, shooting a 2-under 70 in the Children's Miracle Network Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., to take a four-stroke lead over Chris Stroud into the final round.

Thatcher needs a victory or solo second-place finish to vault into the top 125 in money won, the cutoff for full PGA Tour status.

• Tiger Woods shot his best round of the week, 6-under 65, in the final round of the Australian Masters but was assured of going an entire year without a victory. The leaders were on the course when this edition went to press.

• Suzann Pettersen moved into position for her first LPGA Tour victory of the year, shooting a 3-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico.

• Adam Scott shot a 2-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead in the Singapore Open.

Rapids win spot in final Kosuke Kimura scored in the 43rd minute and the Colorado Rapids beat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 in Commerce City, Colo., and advanced to the MLS Cup.

The seventh-seeded Rapids reached the MLS final for the first time since losing to D.C United in 1997. They will face the FC Dallas-Los Angeles winner Sunday in the title game Nov. 21 in Toronto.

Tennis: Gael Monfils saved five match points to beat top-seeded Roger Federer 7-6 (7), 6-7 (1), 7-6 (4) and reach the Paris Masters final against Robin Soderling.
