Two people were shot, one fatally, inside a house Wednesday morning at 1511 E. 38th St. in south Minneapolis, police said.

Police responded to a 911 call about shots fired at 10:30 a.m., according to Inspector Lucy Gerold, head of the Minneapolis police Third Precinct. When officers arrived, they found a 24-year-old man dead in the house. Another man who was shot was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Gerold said the suspects apparently knew the victims. "There was a very specific reason they were at this house," Gerold said. She said it was not gang-related.

Rodney Knight, who lives down the block, said he opened his window after the rain stopped and saw a man crying.

"I thought it was an accident," Knight said.

The man wouldn't stop crying and was being consoled by another man, said Bebe Sharief, who owns Amand's Exotic Food Market across the street.

"I've been here 38 years and never seen anything like this," Sharief said. "It's not a bad neighborhood."

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
