PS3 can handle memory cards

PS3, Blu-ray can play AVCHD video directly from memory cards.

Q I have an AVCHD camcorder that records on SDHC memory cards. Is there a way to display the video with my PlayStation 3 without going through the hassle of burning discs?

PASCAL POCHOL, Chicago

A The PlayStation 3 and many other Blu-ray players can play AVCHD video directly from memory cards. Simply plug a high-speed SDHC card reader into a PS3 USB port and insert the card directly from your camcorder. The card will show onscreen as a video source, which you can select, play and control with the PS3 remote. Some stand-alone Blu-ray players also have USB ports or SD card slots that will accept the cards directly.

You can use SDHC cards as an easy way to move content from your computer to your TV. When you download AVCHD content from your camcorder to computer it will be in the form of folders. Keep your downloaded folders organized so you can easily find what you need and be sure to back them up on an external drive or DVD-R disc. If you don't, your memories might be lost forever if your hard drive crashes.

Whenever you want to watch video on your TV you can copy archived folders back to a blank SDHC card for use with your PS3 or compatible Blu-ray player. Just be sure to transfer the complete folder, because it contains many subfolders and files that are often necessary for proper playback.

You can use the USB ports and card readers to review digital pictures, too. I've tried this feature on several Blu-ray players. It works well and does a much better job than connecting your camera to your TV with a video cable.

DTVPal isn't for cable Q Does your recent recommendation, DTVPal DVR, work with a cable connection?

A The DTVPal DVR does not work with cable. It is designed to be used only with an antenna and is marketed primarily to homes without cable or satellite. The DTVPal DVR functions as an over-the-air tuner (with two tuners) and DVR all in one.

Power conditioner update I recently recommended using a home-theater power center with a battery backup, if you are going to use one at all. I was careful to recommend an affordable home-theater model but did not point out the difference between home-theater battery-backup devices and those designed for computers, which are typically much less expensive. You cannot use all battery-backup devices with home-theater components because, for example, computer models have different output properties and capabilities. If you are buying a battery backup/power conditioner for home-entertainment use, be sure to buy one designed for it.
