The Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Titans announced a blockbuster trade Thursday morning, which includes the Rams getting the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft.
Rams trade for No. 1 overall pick – will they take NDSU's Wentz?
Speculation is that the Rams will use the pick to draft a quarterback, and that could well be Carson Wentz of five-time national champion North Dakota State.
Pro Football Talk has these trade details: "To get the top pick from the Titans, the Rams gave up their first-round pick this year (No. 15 overall), their first-round pick next year, both of their second-round picks this year (their own and the one they got from the Eagles in the Sam Bradford/Nick Foles trade) and their third-round pick next year. The Titans are also throwing in their fourth-round pick and sixth-round pick this year."
The web site also speculated that the Rams made the trade so they could pick North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz, who was thought to be the choice of Cleveland, which has the No. 2 pick in the draft, which starts on April 28.
In addition, Los Angeles Times writer Sam Farmer tweeted:
Wentz impressed scouts both at the NFL combine last month and again during North Dakota State's recent Pro Day in Fargo.
Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith writes: "Obviously, this means the Rams see a franchise quarterback in this draft, and they think that quarterback will lead them in their new hometown of Los Angeles for years to come. That quarterback is likely to be North Dakota State's Carson Wentz, although some see Cal's Jared Goff as the better pick."
Tennessee doesn't have a need for a quarterback because it took Marcus Mariota with the No. 2 pick in last year's draft.
