Thad Levine, currently the assistant general manager of the Texas Rangers, has emerged as a candidate to work under Derek Falvey once he takes over as the Twins chief baseball officer, according to a source familiar with the Twins search.
Rangers official Thad Levine could be next general manager of Twins
The Twins, according to another source, tried to hire Red Sox executive Amiel Sawdaye before he agreed to join the Diamondbacks as a senior vice president and assistant general manager.
It's believed that Falvey, a Cleveland executive who has been announced as the Twins' chief baseball officer, would make Levine his GM if the Texas executive is hired. The Twins looked at several candidates.
Levine has been in his current role since 2005, and assists Rangers General Manager John Daniels in various roles within the baseball operations department. That includes contract negotiations and statistical and financial analysis.
Before the Rangers, Levine also spent time six seasons with the Rockies and one with the Dodgers. He's an Alexandria, Va., native who played baseball at Haverford (Pa.) College.
Falvey was announced as the Twins' hire on Oct. 3 but will not officially take over until the World Series is over. There has been limited communication between the Twins and Falvey, as much as the Indians and Major League Baseball are comfortable with.
Still, it's believed that decisions are being made on the composition of the baseball operations department, as well as who stays and goes among the major league coaching staff. Only manager Paul Molitor is assured of returning next season.
Once Falvey is introduced as the CBO, the Twins are expected to make several announcements over the following weeks.
