The Tampa Bay Rays finalized a $4 million, one-year contract with free-agent outfielder Carlos Gomez.

The 32-year-old batted .255 with 17 home runs, 23 doubles, 51 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 105 games for Texas last season.

With the Rays, Gomez likely will move into the right-field job vacated when Steven Souza Jr. was traded to Arizona last month. The Tampa Bay roster also includes Denard Span, Gomez's former teammate with the Twins.

A two-time NL All-Star, Gomez has hit .256 with 133 homers and 504 RBI over 11 seasons with five teams.

• Star outfielder Bryce Harper returned to Washington's lineup following surgery to remove an ingrown toenail, striking out twice and walking in the Nationals' 8-1 exhibition victory over Houston on Saturday in West Palm Beach, Fla. Nationals righthander Stephen Strasburg, coming off back-to-back 15-victory seasons, pitched two innings in his first spring start, giving up a run on three hits while striking out two.

• Baltimore and infielder Danny Valencia agreed on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. The 33-year-old former Twins third baseman will make $1.2 million if he makes the Orioles and can add $3 million in performance bonuses. Valencia, who played for the Orioles in 2013, hit .256 in 130 games with Seattle last year, with 15 home runs and 66 RBI.

• Righthander Noah Syndergaard pitched three innings in his second start for the New York Mets, giving up a run on a hit and a walk and striking out four against Miami. His fastball once again topped 100 miles per hour.
