Recipe: Satan's whiskers

SATAN'S WHISKERS

Serves 1.

For a great cocktail name, you can't beat Satan's Whiskers, from "Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails."

• 1/2 oz. (1 tbsp.) gin

• 1/2 oz.(1 tbsp.) dry vermouth

•1/2 oz. (1 tbsp. ) sweet vermouth

• 1/2 oz. (1 tbsp.) orange juice

• 2 tsp. orange curacao

• 1 tsp. orange bitters

• 1 orange twist, for garnish

Directions

Shake in an iced cocktail shaker, and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

Serves 1.

The basic Negroni formula -- equal parts gin, sweet vermouth and Campari -- is as enduring as it is delicious, but "Boozehound"author Jason Wilson couldn't help but tinker. Wilson says this version is "in every way the equal of the classic Negroni. In fact, it's better."

• 11/2 oz. (3 tbsp.) bourbon, like Buffalo Trace, Four Roses or Russell's Reserve

• 1 oz. (2 tbsp.) sweet vermouth

• 1 oz. (2 tbsp.) Campari

• Lemon peel twist, for garnish

Fill a mixing glass halfway with ice. Add the bourbon, vermouth and Campari. Stir vigorously for 30 seconds, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with the lemon peel twist.

THE FORD COCKTAIL

Serves 1.

As author Ted Haigh says, "this drink needs no fiddling."

• 1 oz. (2 tbsp.) Old Tom gin (preferably Hayman's Old Tom)

• 1 oz. (2 tbsp.) dry vermouth (fresh only; keep in the fridge)

• 3 dashes Benedictine

• 3 dashes orange bitters

• Orange twist, for garnish

Directions

Stir well with finely cracked ice, and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist.
