The rising junior and St. Paul native heads to his fourth college after failing to play in a single game for the Gophers. Minnesota coach Richard Pitino signed Lofton, who played one year at San Jacinto College and one year at Illinois State previously, in April of last year, but dismissed him from the team after a single exhibition game, citing his failure to "meet the expectations and obligations of the team."
Lofton would have redshirted last year regardless, due to NCAA transfer rules. He still has two years of eligibility remaining.
Pitino had speculated that Lofton had a "long shot" chance to rejoin the team this season had he fulfilled undisclosed requirements, but had given no guarantees.
Lofton averaged 11.3 points and three rebounds a game as a sophomore with the Redbirds.
