Enter the Aardvark
By Jessica Anthony. (Little, Brown, 182 pages, $26.)
Congressman Alexander Paine Wilson of Virginia opens the door of his Washington, D.C., townhouse to sign for an extraordinarily large package from a FedEx deliveryman. Thus "Enter the Aardvark" by Jessica Anthony begins.
Wilson wrestles the package into his home. Inside it is the Namibian aardvark that had once presided in the bedroom of his lover, Greg Tampico. The congressman wants it out of his home. He is in the midst of a heated re-election campaign. The creature reminds him that he needs to find a wife.
Anthony has woven the historic and the contemporary into this brilliant and fast-paced novel. Bursts of hilarity and heartbreak make it a delight to read. A perfect escape for this political season.
