No. 9 hitter Jimmy Kerrigan homered in each of the first two innings and drove in five runs, and the St. Paul Saints opened a six-game series with Indianapolis with an 16-1 victory at CHS Field on Tuesday.
Saints score eight in first, five in second on way to blowout of Indianapolis
Rob Refsnyder hit a two-run homer to open the scoring in an eight-run first, which also included Damek Tomscha's two-run single and Kerrigan's three-run homer.
In the second inning, Ben Rortvedt hit a two-run double, J.T. Riddle added an RBI single and Kerrigan hit his second home run, a two-run shot that made it 13-0.
Given a giant lead to work with, Chandler Shepherd cruised from there. The Saints righthander didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning and pitched seven shutout innings in all, giving up two hits and walking one while striking out three. Hunter Owen homered off Robinson Leyer leading off the eighth inning to break up the shutout.
