Minneapolis has a long history of its Mississippi River islands appearing and disappearing. Shifting river levels from runoff or dam projects, construction, and dredging are some of the reasons. This map shows multiple islands that used to exist in the central part of the riverfront; others have appeared and disappeared in upriver and downriver portions of the river.
