Top overal pick signs Steven Stamkos signed a three-year, $2.625 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, which already has penciled in the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft as the team's second-line center.

The 18-year-old's standard entry-level contract includes a yearly base salary of $875,000, as well as a maximum of $8.55 million in performance bonuses that could make the deal worth up to $11.175 million.

Stamkos had 100 goals and 97 assists in 124 games over two seasons for Sarnia in the Ontario Hockey League. He is the third player the Lightning has drafted No. 1 overall, joining Roman Hamrlik in 1992 and Vincent Lecavalier in 1998.

"I'm definitely going to have expectations that I put on myself to produce," Stamkos said during a teleconference. "I'm known as an offensive player, and I definitely want to put up some reasonable numbers."

Federer wins; Roddick withdraws Roger Federer shook off his early-round loss in Toronto last week and beat Robby Ginepri 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-0 in his first match at the Cincinnati Masters in Mason, Ohio.

"I'm back with a one-match winning streak," Federer said. "I'm happy I could turn it around today." Ginepri was competitive for two sets, but fell to 0-5 against the top-ranked Federer.

Andy Roddick, the No. 6 seed, withdrew just before his match with Philipp Kohlschreiber was to begin, citing neck and shoulder pain.

Roddick asked for the public address microphone and told spectators that he didn't think he could get through his match, so he withdrew to allow another player to compete. Woong-Sun Jun of Korea took his place and was dispatched 6-2, 6-2.

Illini player faces probation loss Only a few months before junior guard Jamar Smith was expected to return to the basketball court for the University of Illinois, a prosecutor said she wants a judge to revoke his probation for allegedly drinking alcohol.

Smith is serving two years' probation after pleading guilty last year to felony driving under the influence causing great bodily harm. But Champaign police allegedly spotted Smith outside a campus bar about 2:30 a.m. Friday while they broke up an argument, prosecutors said. Smith wasn't involved in the argument but, according to police, an officer noticed Smith smelled like alcohol.

Powe will be a 21-year-old freshman defensive tackle when practice begins this weekend. The NCAA twice denied Powe eligibility before declaring him a partial qualifier last August with the stipulation that he must complete a year of college before joining the team. Powe suffers from dyslexia and attention deficit disorder.
