St. Jude Medical Inc. said Wednesday that it plans to double the space of its cardiovascular division in Plymouth, pending city approval.
The 26-acre site is the former home of AGA Medical, which St. Jude acquired in 2010. The global medical device company plans to add a three-story, 275,000-square-foot addition to the building on Nathan Lane, which has about 205,000 square feet. The enlarged campus will include space for manufacturing, research and development, and administrative offices.
Little Canada-based St. Jude did not disclose the cost of the project, which the Plymouth City Council is expected to discuss on Jan. 24.
The expansion is driven by anticipated growth of St. Jude's cardiovascular devices business, but the company is not expected to immediately hire more workers to fill the space, according to a spokeswoman.
Frank Callaghan, president of St. Jude's cardiovascular division, said in a statement that the goal is to bring employees currently working in leased space in Minnetonka and Maple Grove under one roof and to "help streamline operations and business activities."
Construction could begin in February and be completed in early 2013.
