A 12-year-old boy who had been swimming at St. Louis Park Middle School during a physical education class Thursday morning was found unconscious in the pool and taken to a nearby hospital.

Class had just ended and the students were in the locker room when the teacher found the seventh-grader in the deep end shortly before 9 a.m., said Jamie Zwilling, spokesman for the city of St. Louis Park.

The teacher jumped in, pulled the student out and began CPR, Zwilling said. The student was unconscious and not breathing at the time, he said.

A school resource officer also responded and 911 was called.

St. Louis Park police and fire responders continued CPR until Hennepin County paramedics arrived.

The student was taken to Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital and later transferred to Gillette Children's Hospital in St. Paul. The boy's name has not been released and no information about his condition was available Thursday evening.
