The St. Olaf Showcase, in which 1,800 runners competed last Thursday, proved the rankings right, at least in the big class.

The Minnesota Cross Country Coaches Association ranked Wayzata's Abbey Nechanicky first among Class 3A girls and Armstrong's Noah Breker first among Class 3A boys in its preseason rankings. Each won at that early-season competition on the same course where the Minnesota State High School League holds the state championships, and Nechanicky and Breker remain atop the updated rankings.

Defending state champion Isabelle Schmitz of Hutchinson holds the top ranking among Class 2A girls.
