St. Paul police chief interviews in New Orleans

St. Paul Police Chief John Harrington was in New Orleans on Tuesday, interviewing as a finalist for the top law enforcement job in that city.

A 33-year veteran with the St. Paul department, Harrington, 54, announced in December that he would retire when his term expires at the end of June.

Former Mayor Randy Kelly appointed Harrington chief in 2004.

Meanwhile, the process for choosing Harrington's successor is winding down.

Four finalists -- all from within the department -- answered questions at public forums on Monday and Tuesday, and Mayor Chris Coleman interviewed candidates Tuesday.

The candidates are Watch Cmdr. Todd Axtell, Senior Cmdrs. Colleen Luna and Bill Martinez, and Assistant Chief Thomas Smith.

Coleman is expected to name his choice within a couple of weeks. The City Council would then vote to confirm the mayor's pick.
