The St. Paul police officers who shot and wounded a suspect who led them on an 8-mile car chase Friday evening were identified Sunday as Darin McDonald, a six-year veteran of the force, and Michael Tschida, a four-year veteran.
The suspect, who was shot three times, remained hospitalized at Regions in St. Paul Sunday and is expected to survive, police said, adding that no further information will be available until Monday.
The suspect has not been charged, and his name has not been released. Police have said he is likely to be charged with fleeing police.
Officers tried to stop the car near Marion Street and Front Avenue for an alleged traffic violation shortly after 5 p.m. Friday. But the driver sped away in a circuitous 8-mile route through the North End, slowing at one point while a passenger bailed out and ran.
After a chase reached up to 80 miles per hour, the driver fled the car in the area of N. Woodbridge Street and Front, and officers shot him.
Sgt. Paul Paulos said Friday night that the officers believed that the man was armed. He would not say whether a gun was found at the scene.
