St. Paul residents need to choose their newest alley accessory before the city's highly anticipated citywide garbage collection program launches Oct. 1.

Under the new system, which has been in the works for more than two years, haulers will collect trash along designated routes. Residents will find out in August which hauler will serve their street or alley.

Property owners need to tell the city by June 1 what size garbage bin they want and how often they want their trash picked up — otherwise, the city will decide for them.

Starting next week, the city will mail information about cart size and service options. Property owners will have the choice between small, medium and large carts that hold 35, 64 or 96 gallons. Garbage will be picked up weekly, with an option of collection every other week for the smallest cart.

All residential property owners of households with up to four units, including rentals and townhomes, will be required to participate in the citywide garbage services.
