St. Scholastica survives, will play for baseball regional title

St. Scholastica of Duluth remained alive in the losers' bracket Friday and advanced to play host Wisconsin-Whitewater in the NCAA Division III baseball regional.

St. Scholastica eliminated St. Thomas 2-1, scoring the go-ahead run in the sixth when Joe Link hit a leadoff single, stole second and scored after the catcher's throw caromed off his helmet into center field.

Freshman Andy Davis got the victory with a seven-hitter.

MIAC champion Hamline was eliminated in the day's first game, a 5-1 loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Warhawks (35-11), who beat Stevens Point 2-1 in Friday's finale, need one victory Saturday over St. Scholastica to advance; the Saints must win twice.

Division II baseball Host St. Cloud State and Minnesota State Mankato saw their regional game suspended by rain with the Mavericks ahead 3-1 after eight innings. That game will be completed at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the postponed game between Winona State and Nebraska-Kearney to start 30 minutes later.

In the only playoff game completed Friday, Mesa State eliminated Augustana 4-3.

Division II softball Ashley Meyer pitched a one-hitter and struck out 11 for Augustana in a 4-0 victory over Minnesota State Mankato in the first game of a best-of-three super regional in Sioux Falls, S.D. The second game will be Saturday.

NCAA golf Playing as individuals at the San Diego Regional, Gophers men's golfers Donald Constable and Erik Van Rooyen are tied for 16th and 64th, respectively, after the first round of the 54-hole tournament. Constable, a senior, posted an even-par 72, while Van Rooyen, a sophomore, shot an 80 at the Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

• The Gophers women's team slipped from 11th place into a tie for 16th at the NCAA tournament in Tyler, Texas. Teresa Puga is the highest-ranked Gophers individual, tied for 18th after shooting a 2-under-par 70 in the third round.

Etc. •The host Hamilton Bulldogs won 4-2 over the Wild's top affiliate, the Houston Aeros, in Game 5 of th AHL's Western Conference finals. JM Daoust and Jed Ortmeyer scored for the Aeros, and Jeff Hackett made 26 saves. Game 6 will be Sunday in Houston.

• The Gophers' scheduled baseball game against Ohio State at Target Field was rained out. The teams will play at noon Saturday.

• Justin Snyder singled in Adam Frost with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning for the Saints in a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Midway Stadium. Frost and Snyder combined for five of the Saints' 10 hits.
