Let's face it: Tonight's quarterfinals of the football section playoffs features must-see games only if you're fans of the teams. Many of the top teams have first-round byes or are paired against the teams seeded at the bottom. But staff writers David LaVaque and Jim Paulsen dug out three intriguing matchups to launch the playoff edition of their 2013 picks.
Cooper (5-3) at Spring Lake Park (5-3), 7 p.m.
Jim says: A rematch of a Sept. 20 game in which Spring Lake Park rushed for more than 300 yards, took a 35-0 lead and coasted to a 41-20 victory. Pride will keep Cooper closer, but Spring Lake Park wins again. Pick: Spring Lake Park 26, Cooper 23.
David says: Make room for me on the Panthers' bandwagon, Jim. Forget that 0-2 start against section opponents. Spring Lake Park won five of its next six games and is capable of a deep playoff run. Pick: Spring Lake Park 35, Cooper 21.
Park Center (2-6) at Fridley (4-4), 7 p.m.
Jim says: There's talent and explosiveness at Class 4A Park Center, just not enough to compete consistently in the mostly 6A Northwest Suburban Conference. The Pirates' difficult schedule will help them here. Pick: Park Center 34, Fridley 28
David says: Fridley also was over its head, classification-wise, for half of its season. But the Tigers hardly were overmatched, defeating two 5A teams. They will find a way at home. Pick: Fridley 21, Park Center 19.
Henry Sibley (4-4) at Hastings (3-5), 7 p.m.
Jim says: Henry Sibley won three of its past four games, including a 31-8 rout of Hill-Murray. Hastings' defense gives up yards in big chunks. I'm calling an upset for the Warriors. Pick: Henry Sibley 30, Hastings 28.
David says: Yes, the Raiders defense springs leaks. But if the offense can erupt, Hastings wins a track meet at McNamara Stadium at Todd Field, one of the state's finest football settings. Pick: Hastings 42, Henry Sibley 38.
