Stillwater adding a 2nd trolley

February 5, 2011 at 3:04AM

Stillwater is getting a second trolley and shuttle service.

The City Council this week approved a plan that will allow Trolley Tour LLC to operate in the St. Croix River city from April 1 to Oct. 31. The company, operated by business man Tom McGlynn, will pay the city $645 for the season to rent a parking space behind a gas station at the corner of Myrtle and Water streets, said City Administrator Larry Hansen.

In the original proposal, McGlynn wanted a parking space near Leo's Grill & Malt Shop, but the restaurant objected and the city and McGlynn compromised on a space behind the Gulf gas station, Hansen said.

It's unclear if the city can support two trolley services. Bob Raleigh, who runs the Stillwater Trolley Company and has been giving narrated tours in the city for 22 years, said business has dropped of in recent years with the downturn in the economy.

In making its decision, "the Council did not feel it was its position to favor one company over another and that things should be open and fair," Hansen said. "The question was, are we treating people equally? The council said let it run if it can get the business."
