Suburban World theater in Uptown to get makeover

July 20, 2013 at 9:34PM

The first renderings of what the new, renovated Granada Theater will look like on Hennepin Avenue are now available.

The historic, 85-year-old property — more recently known as the Suburban World theater — has sat empty for more than a year on one of Uptown neighborhood's most bustling commercial corridors. Plans call for it to be turned into a retail space.

A description of the plans from DJR Architecture says the restoration will include repairing the twinkling ceiling lights, rehabbing damaged walls and ceilings and removing some 1990s elements. The building's facade also will be cleaned.

It remains unclear who the retail tenant will be, however. The building is surrounded by many other retail entities, including H&M, an Apple Store and Columbia.

The city's heritage preservation committee will discuss the plans at their meeting this week.
