U.S. men whip Barbados in qualifying opener Clint Dempsey's goal 53 seconds in set the tone, Brian Ching had two goals, and the United States cruised to a record-setting 8-0 rout of Barbados on Sunday in Carson, Calif., in the Americans' first qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup.
Dempsey added a second-half goal for the United States, whose victory margin was the largest in team history and only the second time it scored eight goals. The other was an 8-1 victory over the Cayman Islands in 1993.
"We're not going to say we're going to go out and win the World Cup after playing Barbados," Dempsey said. "Nothing against them. They came out and tried hard, but we're supposed to win these types of games decisively."
U.S. women top Australia The U.S. women's team beat Australia 2-1 in its opening match of the 2008 Peace Queen Cup in Suwon, South Korea, on goals by Natasha Kai in the first half and Abby Wambach 13 minutes from the end of the game. Kai's goal was her team-leading 11th of 2008 and 19th of her international career. Heather Garriock tied the score in the 57th minute. But Wambach got the winner, her 96th international goal, on a back-header. "It went off the [ponytail]," she said.
Turkey stuns Czechs Turkey stunned the Czech Republic with three goals in the final 15 minutes, including two in three minutes, for a 3-2 victory in Geneva that lifted the Turks into the European Championship quarterfinals.
The Czechs were in control 2-0 on goals by Jan Koller and Jaroslav Plasil before Turkey staged its comeback in the rain. Arda Turan scored in the 75th minute, Nihat Kahveci tied it off a mistake by goalkeeper Petr Cech, and Nihat won it in the 89th with a sharp shot off the crossbar and into the net.
In Basel, Switzerland, Hakan Yakin scored twice, helping the co-host beat a Portugal team resting eight starters, 2-0.
• In MLS play, Kenny Cooper's goal in the 17th minute lifted FC Dallas (4-5-4) to a 1-0 victory over Chicago (6-4-1) in Frisco, Texas.
TENNIS
Nadal wins first title on grass Rafael Nadal won the first grass-court title of his career, defeating Novak Djokovic 7-6 (5), 7-5 in the Queen's Club final in London. Nadal became the first Spaniard to win on grass in 36 years. It was the French Open champion's third victory in the last three tournaments over Djokovic, following semifinal victories in Hamburg and Paris. Andres Gimeno was the last Spaniard to win on grass, at Eastbourne in 1972.
• Top-ranked Roger Federer beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4 in the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, for the 10th grass-court title of his career. That matches Pete Sampras' Open era record of 10 grass-court titles and takes Federer's unbeaten streak on grass to 59 matches.
WNBA
Silver Stars top Fever Ann Wauters had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and San Antonio beat Indiana 70-60 in Indianapolis and spoiled Tamika Catchings' season debut. Catchings, who tore her right Achilles' tendon in last year's Eastern Conference finals and underwent surgery in September, played 12 minutes in a reserve role and finished with two points and one rebound.

Cycling: Alejandro Valverde won the Dauphine Libere in Grenoble, France, putting the Spanish cyclist among the favorites for next month's Tour de France.
Football: Former Marshall defensive end Johnathan Goddard died early Sunday after a motorcycle accident in Clay County in northern Florida. Goddard's motorcycle went off the shoulder of a road at a high speed and overturned about 7:40 p.m. Saturday, the Highway Patrol reported. Goddard was the Mid-American Conference defensive player of the year and an AP second-team All-America in 2004, when he led the nation with 16 sacks and 28 tackles for loss.
