Acme Markets, one of Supervalu's larger grocery chains, announced Thursday that it will cut 900 part-time positions to get its employment in line with its revenue, which has sagged in recent quarters.

Eden Prairie-based Supervalu, which owns the Twin Cities' largest supermarket chain, Cub Foods, has watched its nationwide same-store sales spiral downward for about three years.

The company, one of the country's largest supermarket operators, has noted that same-store sales declines have been particularly bad at its Northeastern chains: Acme, Shaw's and Shoppers.

Acme operates 117 stores and is a big player in the Philadelphia area. It also has a presence in New Jersey, Delaware and Marlyand. The layoffs are effective May 7.
