A young man was shot to death Saturday as he walked along a north Minneapolis street, and police were looking for at least one suspect who fled the scene in a vehicle.

The shooting was reported just before noon. According to police spokesman John Elder, a man was walking west on 39th Avenue N. near Colfax Avenue N. when a white sedan pulled up and someone inside the car fired several shots at him.

The victim stumbled into an alley behind a house in the 3800 block of Colfax, where he collapsed and died despite first responders' efforts to save him.

The suspect vehicle fled north on Dupont Avenue N. It was not known how many people were in the car, Elder said.

Police do not have any information that leads them to believe there's an ongoing threat to the public, Elder said of the shooting. The victim was not identified.

Grieving family members, friends and neighbors gathered at the scene for a couple of hours after the shooting as police interviewed witnesses.

Arnetta Phillips was arriving at her home on nearby Emerson Avenue N. when she heard gunshots and headed to the scene.

"This is another young man we've got to put in the grave," said Phillips, a minister and director of community outreach at Shiloh Temple International Ministries in Minneapolis.

"It's senseless," said Phillips, who lost a grandson to gun violence in 2010. "Where are these kids getting these guns from?

"I've done too many funerals. I've buried too many of them," she said. "I'm tired."
