A union representing about 2,000 security guards at Twin Cities office buildings and other complexes said Thursday it had reached a tentative contract agreement with the contractors that employ the guards.

Under the new contract, current security officers would get a minimum wage of $15 an hour and all future officers "will be on the path to do the same," a statement from Local 26 of the Service Employees International Union said.
The four-year contract would provide "substantial" raises, more sick days and an improvement in health care benefits, the union said. Union members will vote on the contract over the next few weeks. The union's current security guard contract expires on Feb. 29.
The new contract covers several employers, including Securitas, American Security, G4S, Universal Protection Service and AlliedBarton, according to the union.
A representative for the security companies could not be reached for comment.
