The gold jacket ceremony. A bust revealed. A welcoming into football's most exclusive fraternity. Terrell Owens apparently wants no part of that – not in the formal manner embraced by his predecessors, at least.
The receiver has astonishingly declined his invitation to the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio.
In a statement he released Thursday, Owens offered little insight into his curious decision to not take part in the enshrinement Aug. 4: "While I am incredibly appreciative of this opportunity, I have made the decision to publicly decline my invitation to attend the induction ceremony in Canton. I have already shared this information with the Hall. After visiting Canton earlier this year, I came to the realization that I wish to celebrate what will be one of the most memorable days of my life, elsewhere."
Owens, who played for San Francisco during most of his career, was elected in his third year of eligibility. He'd previously expressed his frustration with the process. Just last week at an event hosted by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, Owens talked about his disappointment.
"All the hard work that I put in to become the receiver that I did and not really be recognized officially the first go-around, that's where I felt slighted," Owens told the Charlotte Observer. "And so, I wasn't disappointed; I never was disappointed. I just felt disrespected. Other than that, I knew how much hard work I put in for me becoming the receiver that I did, so if they couldn't recognize that by my body of work, then something was wrong."Owens was named an All-Pro five times and was selected to the Pro Bowl six times. His 15,934 career yards ranks second all-time.
Owens is joined in the 2018 class by former Vikings receiver Randy Moss, linebacker Brian Urlacher, linebacker Ray Lewis, guard Jerry Kramer, safety Brian Dawkins, linebacker Robert Brazile and contributors candidate Bobby Beathard.
Moss is considerably more excited about his Hall of Fame induction.
"I can remember being in the yard talking about, 'Hey man, I'm going to throw this pass like Joe Montana,' " Moss said. "And, 'Hey, man, I'm going to run you over like Walter Payton.' And, 'Hey, man, I'm going to catch this ball like Jerry Rice.'
