It's "Take a Kid Fishing Weekend." All anglers age 16 or older can fish for free June 10-12 in Minnesota as long as they bring a kid 15 years old or younger. This weekend also happens to be National Get Outdoors Day , and all Minnesota state parks are offering free admission Saturday. There are also great events to see and catch live fish all over the Twin Cities from Powderhorn Park in south Minneapolis to Thompson Park in Dakota County. What great incentives to spend time with the family this weekend. I'm looking forward to getting out there with my wife and kids. We're packing up to go up north for a week, where I plan to do a lot of fishing and not a lot of time on my iPhone. My son is just old enough to pick up that Spider-Man rod and reel this year, which is very exciting for me. Hopefully, he'll reel in a Sunny or a Crappie, and that will ignite an interest for fishing, just like my family tried to start in me. Even if he doesn't catch a thing, though, there's a special bond formed over waiting quietly in a boat, watching clear waters, and hearing nothing but the occasional loon in the distance. It's that kind of togetherness that being outdoors creates, and it makes me appreciate Minnesota's Great Outdoors all the more. And if the boy doesn't like fishing, that's ok. His toddler sister has been eyeing that Spider-Man rig too.
