Highlights

Men’s golf: Golf is no traditional Olympics sport, but the world’s best have been thrilled to participate, and they are in place again this year, the third Olympics golf competition. The men’s field, with 60 participants, begins play Thursday (Golf Channel, 6 a.m. and USA, 8:45 a.m.). World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and recent British Open champion Xander Schauffele, the Tokyo gold medalist, represent the U.S.

Women’s field hockey: The U.S. women’s rugby team caused a jolt of enthusiasm with its determined roll to a bronze medal. It makes us wonder if field hockey can connect. Try it. The United States takes on Great Britain in women’s pool play (USA, 10 a.m.). The United States is winless in pool play with a loss a draw and two losses. Great Britain is 1-2.

Women’s basketball: The U.S. women’s basketball team looks to extend its Olympic winning streak to 57 games when the Americans play Belgium. The team has not lost in the Olympics since the 1992 Barcelona Games. A’ja Wilson scored 24 points and Breanna Stewart added 22 to help the U.S. beat Japan 102-76 in Monday night’s opening game. The U.S. has won seven consecutive gold medals. Brittney Griner is playing her first international games since she spent time in a Russian prison in 2022 after she was sentenced to nine years in jail for drug possession and smuggling.
