Dual-flush device saves water New devices let you turn a standard toilet into a dual-flush model and save money on your water bill.

The HydroRight Dual Flush Converter allows you to control how much water is used for a flush -- less for liquids, more for solids. The device cuts water use by an average of 30 percent when used to retrofit 1.6-gallon toilets, the company says.

The converter attaches to the flush valve and can be installed without tools in less than 10 minutes. It can be used on all standard flush valves.

The HydroRight Dual Flush Converter sells for about $25 at select Ace Hardware stores. If a particular store doesn't carry it, it can be ordered at www.acehardware.com or 1-866-290-5334 and shipped to the store for free. It's also available from some online retailers, including Amazon.com.

Another option is Simple Flush (previously Perfect Flush) by Brondell, a retrofit that turns most standard toilets into dual flushing systems: full-flush or half-flush. Because it uses up to 50 percent less water, homeowners can save as much as $100 per year. Installation is easy and takes just minutes. Cost is $79. Details: www.brondell.com.
