Men's draw: Rafael Nadal was seeded No. 1, making it the first time since January 2004 that a man other than Roger Federer holds that top spot at a Grand Slam tournament. Nadal has never been beyond the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows and lost in the fourth round last year.
Women's draw: No. 1 seed Ana Ivanovic pulled out of the Olympics because of inflammation in her right hand. The last two U.S. Open women's champions won't play -- Justine Henin retired and Maria Sharapova is injured. Venus Williams is seeded seventh and Lindsay Davenport is 23rd.
