Now that's some bad football The late Pete Rozelle made it really hard to be this bad in the NFL, but somehow the Browns, Chiefs, Rams and Lions have gone below and beyond the call of ineptitude. Not only are they a combined 0-12, their combined average margin of defeat is 18.9 points. The Rams, um, "lead" the way with an average whipping of 29 points per game.

What have you done for them lately? Fans in New England are a spoiled bunch. The Red Sox win it all. The Celtics win it all. The Patriots have won it all three times this decade. Yet the moment things went kablooey in Sunday's 38-13 loss to the Dolphins, Pats fans booed. The Pats had won 21 consecutive regular-season games and are trying to hang on without Tom Brady. Give 'em a break.

Stat of the week If the Dolphins of 2008 don't resemble the Dolphins that went 1-15 in 2007, that's because 27 of their 53 players -- 51 percent -- are new to the roster this year.

Nice timing, Bills Talk about good timing. Awful for so many years, the Bills have put together a good team for the year in which they're openly courting Toronto. The Bills are 3-0 for the first time since 1992, one of their Super Bowl seasons. They also are the first team other than New England to lead the AFC East since Week 4 of the 2005 season. The Bills played a preseason game in Toronto and return there on Dec. 7 for a game against Miami. That will be an interesting scene if the Bills keep winning.

Old leg for hire For some of us, there's something soothing about a 44-year-old man playing in the NFL. Even if he is a kicker. Giants kicker John Carney not only is that 44-year-old, he's also a perfect 9-for-9 in field-goal attempts since the defending champs signed him to fill in for the injured Lawrence Tynes. Although Carney's 22-yard field goal in overtime beat the Bengals on Sunday, he knows his days are numbered in New York. "I am a relief pitcher and when my job is done I will go back to the bullpen and hope for another opportunity somewhere around the league," Carney said.
